Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai has revealed some details of the murder of Burhanuddin Rabbani, once Afghanistan’s president and then the chairman of the Supreme Council of Peace.
According to Mr. Karzai, someone told Rabbani that the Afghani opposition wanted to give him an audio recording with their suggestions for a truce. But the man, who allegedly brought the recording to Rabbani’s house, killed him.
At present, one of the members of the Peace Council, who arranged Rabbani’s meeting with the “opposition’s mediator”, and who was present at their meeting but survived, is being interrogated.
No opposition grouping has yet acknowledged that they are behind this murder. The Taliban categorically denies that it has anything to do with it.
Many Afghanis believe that Rabbani’s murderer was an agent of some Western secret service.
