On Tuesday March 15, 2011 the EU energy ministers and managers of power companies met to discuss nuclear-plant safety in Europe after the nuclear crisis in Japan in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake and following tsunami. While speaking direct to the European Parliament committee, EU’s commissioner on Energy GuentherOettinger said “The site is effectively out of control,”“In coming hours there could be further catastrophic events which could pose a threat to the lives of people on the island.”He also went on to say “the statements of the utility operating the distressed plant and those of the Japanese government were starting to differ”There is talk of an apocalypse and I think the word is particularly well chosen,”Oettinger told ministers, according to London’s Daily Telegraph newspaper.
The United Nations atomic inspectors are struggling to get timely information from Japan about the state of the country’s failing reactors, resulting in missteps at the in International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. Technicians at the Japan plant are battling to prevent a nuclear meltdown. The IAEA is trying to analyze information that has come out of Japan .There are twenty people working around-the-clock in the agency’s emergency-response center are often unable to confirm the data, Amano said. On March 14, Amano had stated o the media that there was “no indication” of melting fuel, even after Japanese officials had reported signs of a “high probability.” Tepco had stated yesterday after another explosion that about 70 percent of the fuel rods at the plant’s No. 1 reactor and a third of the No. 2 reactor’s fuel may have been damaged, and temperatures at spent-fuel-cooling pools were rising as radiation was leaking. A group of 50 workers remain at the plant to manage the reactors from a complete meltdown. Earlier in the day those engineers were temporarily evacuated when dangerous radiation levels were detected, but have now returned to continue the battle.
