Paranormal Story #1-Canton Lake Trip
TRUE Story
1984
One night, on a dark stretch of Oklahoma highway, me and my family were on route home from Canton Lake. It was a very clear, star-lit night with a typical muggy breeze coasting through the car my grandfather was too cheap to run the air-conditioner in. In the car was me, my sister, my Aunt, my mom, my grandma and grandpa. We’re cruising along with some crackly old classic country on the radio, when…..out of nowhere…with NO sound nor warning….There was this MASSIVELY bright beam of light that lit up the night on all sides…It looked like a bug’s eye view of a standard car headlight for comparative size…and as soon as it came, it was gone…along with everything powered in the car…We were all panicked, looking around the sky and back and forth at one another like, “WHAT THE??????” It actually took us all a couple of seconds to realize the car was dead and rolling…with this eerie crackling seemingly dying in the circuitry of the radio…All was dark and silent…for a moment anyway…My grandpa began a torrent of cussing as he jerked the car into park before attempting several times to start the car…He had no luck…Most of us were pretty shook up and, since it was a rarely traveled stretch of road…we all got out and headed our separate ways to take a leak. I kept looking all around me, still very freaked out and noticed how clear of a night it was…We all met back up outside of the car as my grandpa began an attempt to work on the car…We all asked each other (almost stupidly really), “Didja see that?” (and similar questions to verify that we all DID see the massively bright light). We were all, at that point, scanning the stars overhead. It seemed like we were standing there in the dark forever…not a single car drifted by…We ate the leftovers of our picnic lunch and watched these cows by a barbed wire fence mooing at each other…My grandpa was like, “Sumptin came thoo here! Them cows is spooked!” He went to go check them out up close…and as he did, we hear this weird…and nearly indescribable low-level “whoosh” overhead…which had us all practically ducking for cover while looking up…There was nothing to see…just this weird, almost liquid “whooshing” sound that came and went…The best I can describe that sound is like the noise you hear when you’re surfacing from swimming underwater in a pool…This noise comes and goes and BAM….The headlights, tail lights and interior lights of the old Chevy click back on, along with the AM radio. We all head back toward the car. My grandpa jumped in, turned the key…and we headed home…It didn’t seem like we were standing by the roadside all that long, long enough for a fat boy (which I was) to scarf down a sandwich…However, by the time we got home it was approaching daybreak…The next day, my grandpa refused to talk about it, blaming that “damned old car…” The rest of us STILL talk about that night though…My grandma swear that my grandfather saw something scary in that field when he went to go see the cows…I tried asking him about that in more recent years and he obstinately shakes his head and tells me to “g’wan an bleev whachu want…” haha!
